Ravenna Corvunis

Ravenna watched as the entire ceiling came off, showing the sunlight. She heard voices coming from outside the door that sounded extremely familiar. There was more than one person and the voices were too muffled to hear exactly what they were saying, but Ravenna picked out quite a high pitched one that sounded too much like Shuichi.
Suddenly the room was covered in darkness and a black shadow came overhead. The booming voice of Nepharious sounded, talking to someone named Tanuki. Must be the accomplice he sent to get rid of me, Ravenna thought. Then Nepharious said something about joining other kids, confusing Ravenna.
There are other people here? But, what? They wouldn’t try to help me? Ravenna considered this fact for a moment before realizing that she still had a plan to follow through with the rest of her friends. Then, remembering her friends, she remembered what she had said a couple of minutes earlier. Oh, Ravenna, you stupid naïve girl, they must’ve been outside when I said that. I was just trying to . . . Oh, I don’t know what I was trying to do but I certainly didn’t mean it. Good gracious, I need to apologize!
Ravenna took her eyes off of the giant black cloud now coming closer and closer, surrounding the building in think fog. Ravenna could hardly see anymore, the black shadow so engulfed in the building, but she groped her way around the small room, feeling desperately for a door. She finally felt it, the crevices in the door making it easy to know it was the door. Ravenna moved her hand in every direction, searching desperately for the doorknob. Finding it, with its colder more metallic feel, she turned it slightly and fell through the door as if she had been pushed.
“Ravenna!” Shuichi shouted, coming out of the darkness and giving her a tight, heart-filled hug. “We were afraid something had happened to you.”
“You guys, I – I’m sorry about what I said earlier,” Ravenna said with all the sympathy in her, which wasn’t a whole lot. “I didn’t mean it at all; he was just getting on my last nerves.”
“Oh, we know, venn-chan.” Shuichi smiled sweetly. “I overheard the rest of the conversation you had with that so-called minister in there.” He grimaced as he said minister, like there was something sour in the name.
“Well this is all well and good, guys, that we got Ravenna back, but we’re a bit in the dark and almost ready to be attacked by some unknown black cloud we know nothing about.” Kykaro came into Ravenna’s short lined amount of sight.
“Oh, Kykaro,” Ravenna breathed. “Are all of you here, then?” she asked Shuichi.
“Well, not all of us,” Crème replied, coming to stand next to Kykaro. “Kyouya, here, drove Yuki out of the building.”
“What do you mean?” Ravenna asked, looking around for any sign of Kyouya.
“I did nothing they say I did,” Kyouya replied, standing in a corner alone, just as cold as he sounded what seemed like so long ago last year. “Don’t believe them. She became angry and blamed everything on me; then she broke up with me in the most crude of manners and ran down the stairs.”
“Oh, Ravenna, do believe us,” Fujiko pleaded, coming to stand next to Crème. “We are telling the truth, you know.”
Izumi came to stand behind Crème, letting his hands fall onto her shoulders. “He’s really quite an angering person, that Kyouya.”
“I’m right here, you know,” Kyouya growled through gritted teeth. “And. I. Did. Nothing.”
“Guys,” said an unfamiliar voice. “Guys, we better not worry about what or what not Kyouya did right at the moment, because Nepharious has completely enclosed up in thick black cloud and I can’t see a thing.”
“Don’t worry, Tanuki,” Crème responded, searching with eyes that saw what Ravenna did not. “I know exactly where you are, just stay still.” Crème moved from Izumi’s grasp and walked toward a dark area of the room.
“So, why is it,” Ravenna questioned as she saw a gangly boy about her own age come into view, “that we can see in this one area as though there was light here?”
Shuichi looked at her with the strangest of looks. “Ravenna, it’s because, well, isn’t it because you’re used to the darkness? Don’t you track in the darkness?”
“Yes, but, this isn’t true darkness, Shuichi,” Ravenna replied. “This is a dark black shadow. A dark black evil shadow. That we are meant to destroy.”
“But won’t,” boomed Nepharious, starting to laugh manically.
“There’s something I should tell you guys,” said the unknown boy. “It’s about Nepharious. You see this dark black shadow? Well, it’s not really him. You see, it’s for effect, he says, like they do in movies, kinda. But he is extraordinarily not because he’s not human, but because he’s stronger than heck and has an unlimited amount of large, dangerous weapons.”
“Right, well, that sounds reassuring,” Izumi replied. “Thanks, Tanuki, for that bit of info.”
So his name’s Tanuki . . . Peculiar name . . . I wonder if he was the one sent to annihilate me? Ravenna pondered a moment before coming back into the real world. “So what are we supposed to do?”
“Not sure yet,” Kykaro replied. “Probably, if we work together, we can do this.”
Shuichi nodded. “We have a magician, who can pretty much do whatever we need done –”
“With certain restrictions,” Kyouya broke in.
“Right, with certain constrictions,” Shuichi continued. “And we have Crème, who has a scythe of amazing skill; also a soul reaper, who has a sword . . . a long sword and skill with that sword; a vampire hunter who can track what she needs and can kill on contact; a so-called ninja who can use his techniques that he learned from school; and a vampire who was taught well.”
“Well,” Ravenna complied, “don’t we have a nice range of people? I’m sure we can make a plan that can bring this Nepharious down.”
“Of course,” Fujiko said, clapping her hands together. “And we have you, Ravenna, because you’re amazing at planning things. Even though last year didn’t go as planned, it still went well, right? I mean, you brought Shuichi back into his normal self and he hasn’t had any problems since. He could’ve killed all of Japan if you hadn’t of been there, Ravenna!” She smiled kindly.
“Of course,” Ravenna said, remembering what the minister had said to her back in his office. Then, remembering the minister, her eyes widened and she groped around to find the door to get back into the room. She found the doorknob and opened it, seeing nothing but pitch black. She listened carefully for any sound of movement but could hear none, and she figured that he had probably fainted from lack of enough air. He was a pretty hefty guy . . .
“Ravenna, are you okay?” Shuichi asked, looking at her with a slightly worried expression.
“Yes, just . . . wondering about the minister, is all,” she replied sighing. “Well, I suppose I should be planning out something, shouldn’t I?”
“It’d be a good idea, yes,” Kykaro replied. “But don’t rush now, we’ve just got a giant evil black cloud surrounding us and some guy named Nepharious with huge destructive weapons ready to kill us right above us. No rush at all . . .”
“Hey, Ky-chan, don’t make her nervous,” Shuichi said, giving him what looked like a try-to-be angry face.
“Right, now, uh, what should I do?” Ravenna thought for a while, trying to put pieces of her plan together. Nothing seemed right, if only Yuki was there, then everything would be put together perfectly . . .
A loud clash came from the area beyond the hallway, as if something had started to attack. It didn’t seem right, though, that Nepharious would’ve missed that badly, to hit so far away from any of them. Maybe he was trying to warn them that the battle was about to begin . . . and Ravenna had no plan yet.
“Ouch,” they heard a girlish voice say from the place the crash had come. “I should try to be more careful . . .”
Ravenna thought for a minute, trying to think why the voice sounded so familiar in her ears. “Yuki . . .?” she questioned. “Yuki Koyama?”
“The one and the only,” laughed a much happier Yuki Koyama than any of them had seen run of the place.
“Yuki?” Fujiko asked delighted. “Why did you come back?”
“I saw the place covered in thick black smoke and figured you guys wouldn’t function a fight unless I was here,” Yuki replied, the smile in her voice. “And plus, I overheard Ravenna’s apology and realized it was stupid of me to think that she would’ve actually not needed us.” Yuki came closer into the area where Ravenna could see. She looked a little frazzled but exactly the way she remembered her.
“It’s nice to have you back,” Shuichi smiled. “Although you were gone for a short amount of time.”
“Well, I can’t help it.” Yuki laughed. “So what’s the plan Venn?”
“Since you’ve come back I’ve got the perfect idea,” Ravenna replied. “Come here, you guys, huddle up.”
And they stood in a tightly huddled circle, listening intently to Ravenna’s plan, making changes here and there and getting prepared for any sort of dangerous attack.

Yuki Koyama

“So, that’s our plan?” Yuki asked, putting her hands on her hips. “That’s what took you so long? It’s nothing!”
“It’s nothing, but it’ll work,” Ravenna replied. “Think about it, Yuki. How’re we supposed to fight off against something we can’t see? This is the best possible bet. This way we don’t have to know exactly where the person is.”
“Yeah, but –”
“No, no more discussion,” Hiroki said, cutting Yuki off mid-sentence. “We’ve stalled long enough; I don’t even know why he hasn’t attacked yet.”
“Because,” Tanuki replied. “I don’t think he’s planning on really attacking us.” Tanuki was looking up at the dark black shadow, not like he was trying to see something, but like he knew exactly where they were.
“What do you mean?” Fujiko asked, looking up at where Tanuki was looking.
“I mean,” Tanuki answered, “that he never stalls this long. And he thinks that you guys are just mere particles in the way of his plan. He thinks you’ll be easily killed.”
“Namingly, why he sent you,” Yuki said. She chuckled slightly at Tanuki’s annoyed stare. Since she had gotten there, all they did was plan there not-so-great plan and finally get their eyes adjusted to the light. Yuki remembered finding out about his ‘mystical flute’ that put people to sleep, only to laugh outright. She didn’t think he was serious when he said that, especially when he said that he mostly put himself to sleep. He seemed quite useless to their battle, but let them carry on anyway.
“Right, so, instead of making fun of each other, how about trying out this ‘great’ plan of yours?” Crème said, looking toward Ravenna. “I start out?”
“Turning into the grim reaper.” Ravenna sighed at everybody’s lack of trust in her plan.
Cookie beeped and flashed green angrily. “You shall not. You cannot change just because you are in a battle. The rules still stand, Crème, there’s no changing them.”
“Oh Cookie,” Crème replied, shaking her head, “don’t be such a worrywart. It’ll be fine. I’ve changed plenty of times.” Cookie had morphed into a scythe at these words and struck Crème lightly on the shoulder. “OW! That was unnecessary!”
“No, you need to understand where you stand, Crème,” Cookie said. “You have duties to fulfill, and you don’t want to lose me.”
“Just change me, Cookie!” Crème was irritable, and Yuki knew Crème when she was irritable. She backed away from Cookie slowly and bumped into Kyouya, standing against the back wall, waiting for each person to get their priorities straight.
“Oh!” Yuki exclaimed as she bumped into Kyouya. “Oh, sorry.” Her voice got colder as she realize who it was she bumped into and she moved away from him quickly. Kyouya grabbed her arm automatically, pulling her toward him against her restraint.
“Stop struggling, Yuki,” Kyouya said, calm as ever. “You’ll never overpower my strength with yours.”
Yuki gave him a cold, angry stare and stood, stalk-still, waiting for him to release her. “So?” she said after a few minutes of just standing there.
“I want to know what I did wrong,” he said simply. “Because I sure don’t think I did anything out of the ordinary to make you go ballistic on me.”
“Why should I tell you anything at all?” Yuki asked acidic.
“Because I have a right to know, Yuki,” Kyouya replied. “You know, we were close once.”
“Yes, were, it’s the key word.” Yuki shook her arm free of Kyouya’s loosening grasp. “We haven’t been close for a while now, Kyouya. I thought it became obvious to you, you know? You act indifferently when you see me, we argue almost all the time.” Yuki sighed heavily, trying to keep from breaking down again. “We are just not close anymore, I’m sorry.” With that she walked away, leaving him with a stunned expression.
Yuki walked toward Izumi, trying to get away from all of the bickering in the remote area. Izumi was standing alone with his arms crossed and his eyes closed. He seemed to be trying to get away from the arguing also. Yuki didn’t understand how they could be stalling Nepharious for so long when they were doing nothing at all. Tanuki said he wasn’t ready to fight, but that didn’t seem quite right because why else would Nepharious be there at this time? They were all in the same place at the same time, it was perfect.
“Hey Izumi,” Yuki said quietly, walking up to Izumi.
He opened his eyes. “Hi, Yuki.”
“What’s up? You seem a bit . . . down.”
“It’s nothing. I just feel a bit useless right now,” Izumi replied.
“How so?”
“Just because I’m doing nothing and have no power to fight against this Nepharious guy. It isn’t really fair, you know?”
“I’m sorry, Izumi,” Yuki said sympathetically. “I never knew you felt that way. In fact . . . I really always thought you were a bit . . . egotistical.”
“Thank you, Yuki,” Izumi said, his voice full of sarcasm. “I needed to hear that right at this particular point in time.” He gave her what was supposedly supposed to be a cold stare and walked to Crème, putting his hand around her waist. Crème immediately stopped bickering with Cookie, relaxed, and put her head against his shoulder.
So now Yuki was alone with no where to really go that she wouldn’t be in the way of someone or near someone who was getting annoyed by her. It was an uncomfortable feeling, being alone, for real, for the first time ever. She missed the comforting feeling she always had when she knew someone was always there, looking out for her and laughing along side her. A tear slid along the side of her cheek; she touched it with the tip of her finger and it stayed on her fingertip long enough for her to look at it. Crying wasn’t something she did often, and today she had done it more than she had in two or three years.
Life was bothering her right now, and she didn’t even understand why. It wasn’t fair to not know why, because since she didn’t know she had no idea how to fix it. Then she remembered breaking down on everyone when Ravenna had said something as simple as she didn’t need friends. Even Yuki knew, in the back of her heart, that when she was breaking down it was really all for nothing. When she had ran down the stairs, she had slipped more than once in trying to get down, her eyes overflowing with tears she didn’t know she had in her. It must’ve been all the tears from times she should’ve cried and didn’t, instead holding them back and trying to be strong. What a silly thing, too.
After finally getting to the bottom of the stairs, mostly because she slid half the way down, she had run into the blonde haired lady at the front counter. She had woken from the spell Kyouya had put on her, Yuki figured it was because Kyouya had lost train of thought, and she knew that was the main thing about magic; train of thought. The blonde lady still looked a bit dazed and confused, wondering what she was doing on the ground and why she had fallen asleep. Yuki had apologized to the lady and told her that she was just in the building because she needed to see an employer there. The blonde lady had looked at her funny and then just shook her head and went back to flipping through paperwork.
After trying to leave through the back way they had come in, Yuki realized that it was closed up and the only way out was through the front two gates. But fear came over her because she was in a weak state of mind and wouldn’t be able to fight off the two security guards. Yuki stood in the middle of the room, still as a statue, trying to think hard about what to do. It was so hard for her at that time; her thoughts had all lay on Kyouya and trying to figure out what he was thinking. She had tried penetrating through his mind block, but as soon as she had yelled at him the blocking had started, and she had nothing but to read his emotions, which didn’t work with Kyouya.
Then Yuki had heard a crash from in the top floor. The blonde lady seemed nervous and fidgety after that; Yuki knew something was wrong up there. To go back would be to face the wrath of her friends, but to not go back would be to face losing them. So, up the stairs she went, when it became pitch black. She couldn’t see anything and felt her way up the stairs until she reached the top. After that she was pretty much screwed because she didn’t remember what anything had looked like.
And then she heard voices; the voices of her friends, talking about what had just happened and about Ravenna. Then Ravenna’s voice came in, apologizing about what she had said and saying that she was only saying it because she had to. Yuki had tried walking toward them as this conversation went on, but ended up running into a small table, breaking a glass vase.
Yuki shook her head, remembering the present time at hand. Man, I’m stupid . . . Yuki thought angrily to herself. If only I would’ve listened more instead of just assuming . . .
“Yuki?” said a calm, high-pitched voice. “Are you still with us, Yuki?”
She looked over at Shuichi, who was bending down to look at her. She had fallen to the ground without realizing it. “Yes,” she answered. “Just thinking.”
“All right, well,” Shuichi said, “we’ve stopped arguing. Crème’s the grim reaper, and we need your help now.”
“All right,” Yuki replied. Shuichi put out his hand to help her up and she grabbed it, pulling herself from the ground. “So, what am I doing?”
“Wait, guys,” Tanuki interrupted, walking toward them. “He’s backing away. I told you he wasn’t gonna fight us.”
It was true, the giant black shadow was descending from the building and it was becoming more and more light again. They teens squinted as the sun hit the building, full blast. Nepharious had left, the big black blob of cloud moving farther and farther away, against the sun.
“Well, now, that was pointless,” Ravenna sighed, looking at Tanuki. “Why’d he even come here if he was just gonna retreat?”
“Because,” Tanuki replied, “I think he came, realized you guys were tougher than he’d thought before, picked up the minister, and left. I believe he’s left to make a plan.”
The other teen’s faces were completely blank as he said this, thinking of how childish someone like Nepharious could be.
“Well,” said Shuichi, “at least we don’t have to fight.” He smiled and started bouncing up and down, excited about something.
“Shuichi,” Kykaro muttered annoyed. “Shuichi, stop bouncing! What’s wrong?”
“Let’s go explore and shop!” Shuichi exclaimed. “Pleeeeaaaseee??”
“Well, we are in France,” Fujiko replied. “It’s a nice place to shop. And we’re here, so we might as well look around. How many times can you come to a country like this?”
“Not often,” Hiroki agreed.
So the teens filed down the stairs, passed the frazzled-looking blonde lady, and out through the front gates, making the security guards extremely confused. Shuichi smiled mischievously as waved invitingly as he walked passed the guard on the left. He turned a florescent red and covered his face with his hand. Shuichi laughed silently.
They walked toward the center of town, Ravenna leading the way. Once there each group split up and went into different shops while Ravenna and Kyouya went off to deal with things like plans of action and thinking of where Nepharious would’ve gone off to and what he was planning.
